Water Leaking onto Carpet of Rear Door - Volkswagen VW Golf Mk7 MKVII Leaking Through Speaker Seals
My Volkswagen Golf Mk7 had wet floors and developed a water leak onto the rear carpets through the rear door speaker seals. It leaks runs under the rubber mats. This video shows you where it occurs - fix it ASAP! Turns out this is a known problem that you can get fixed at the VW dealership or you could fix it yourself!

where are the drain holes, is water supposed to get in there??
Man i had my eyes on a 2019+ gti, are all mk7 7.5 maybe even 8s plagued with this problem???
Same here, I'm currently looking at MK7.5 Golf GTI and this is putting me off a little bit since I had the same issue with the ford focus rear bumper vents.

Changing seal will not help in long term. Just use quality seal in tube and seal all around speaker and half way down metal plate which cover window mechanism. This is permanent way to stop leaking from door panels.

I set up the macro, clicked Tools->Apply Macro->M4A to WAV (the macro I created) and I get "All audio is muted" and it won't let me apply the macro. What step did I miss?

My 2021 mk8 has just come out of the dealership having been fixed after having this problem. Ive been arguying with the dearlership about the dampness. I first noticed the condensation issue 3 months after perchasing the car brand new. Vw must know about it, i exprcted more from them! very disappointing.
Man, that really sucks... after all this time and different model years, you would think it would have been resolved
Great I needed to convert some m4a to mp3 for a swimming headset I got. Worked like a charm by just choosing export to Mp3. Took a little looking around to figure out it put the mp3 in Documents/macros on icloud but now I know I can find them. Thanks for tip

Does this car leak more than the average car?
This failure is caused by heavy slamming of the door so the weight of the speaker causes the seal to break.
Could be yes, wonder what other kind of seal materials other car manufacturers use that can withstand more of a beating
BRILLIANT. If you have an older version of Audacity like mine, this is in the File menu as 'Edit Chains' to create, and 'Apply Chain' to apply :)
Just come across this problem in my 2013 Mk7, having already sorted out leaks from the tail lights and also the rear bumper vents 🙄 Quick question with this and it may be a stupid one, but with the DIY method rather than drill out the rivets and remove the speaker/holder, would it not have the same effect to leave the speaker in place but apply a sealant around the outside of it, to stop the water from behind the speaker coming into the car? Thanks in advance for any answers, id be really grateful!
There are many ways to solve this :-D. Your're onto something - I don't see why not if I had no other option, but would prefer to fix the issue (the broken seal), then a second smearing of liquid sealant wouldn't hurt. Only patching it externally wouldn't stop water getting where the seal (like a sponge) has failed (corrosion or frost damage later?). What did you end up doing? Many tips & ideas here in the comments below.
What did you end up doing? I just found the leak on one of my rear speakers. I might leave it in place and try to apply sealant with it still riveted to the car. I’m curious if you went this route and if it is leaking?
So, did it work? I’m trying to avoid drilling, etc. my plan was to apply a silicon all around the speaker. Thanks

To answer my own question after investigation it doesn't support the 57 GT as no Aux option on stereo sticker
MK7, had the same problem front passenger side floor wet.... I had condensation inside my windows in summer and had to scrape ice from the interior of the windows in winter. VW dealership here 200 bucks. parts n labor. Harmon Kardon.. Best STOCK sound system ive heard in along time..
Sad. I have a '17 GTI, and I've had this issue. It did it shortly after I bought it. I didn't realize it at first. Leak was minimal, over time it got much worse. You go into a VW dealer with a car that has 40,000 miles on the clock, and you are still expected to pay full price. They repaired the leak, but the speaker was messed up. 3 visits later hoping this is the end of the problem.

See comments below, most likely have to activate your aux in settings menu. or check the plug or wiring. Good luck!

Having the same issue with my 2014 gti I have caught it late and it seems the water is now under the carpet on the back floor Carpet is dry to touch but if I squash my hand down on the floor I can hear more water What is the best way to drain that does anyone have any advice?
Lift up the carpet and dry the floor for a couple of days. Or else it will stink... I had to clean under the floor carpet, mildew smell

I recently brought a 2014 mk7 golf and have notice really bad window fogging/inside condensation and a general dampness inside. I had the spare tyre out and found it wet under there, i also noticed the rear floor mats were slightly wet even though no one had been in the back of the car for months. But the carpet underneath seems dry. Think I will have to remove the door panels and see, really disappointed to be having such issues in what's marketed as a "premium brand".

This has happened to my Golf (2017). I took it in to Beadles VW Dealership in Bromley, and the technician has said that it must have been caused by a 'knock' to the car, which is bonkers because there's no sign of damage and nothing flagged in the service history. Only bought it in December 2019. Water coming in through the speaker and not covered under warranty. I've raised it with VW UK but they couldn't help. Going to try to get a second opinion and get VW to cover it but not holding my breath. Absolutely fuming.

I’ve got the same problem. The boot is soaked and mouldy. Only had the car a month. 2018 golf sv. Kept wondering why the windscreen was always fogged up. Contact dealer vw tomorrow. Will let you know what they say.

@@HeathFix this time the drain hole was painted over at the factory. I still get a bit of water in from all doors after heavy rain, but not to the point of wet floors thankfully. Thanks for checking in

Same here. Both sealed failed on my 2017 GTI. Never had this problem on any other cars. German quality LOL

Wow, that's annoying, it could also be a perimeter door seal? check the channels or holes aren't blocked. Otherwise DIY. One person who commented here did it themselves, try asking for the recipe. Good luck!
Fixed it myself. VW will only replace with same crappy riveted speakers. Problem is actually poor rear door design. (affects all 5dr models only) Even replacement OEM speakers will eventually fail as the the gasket seals are continuously subjected to water from rain or washing it and is also usally affected by the angle of the vehicle parked. Note the front speakers are exactly the same ones as the rear but do not fail because door design is different I drilled out the rear speakers, got some after market adaptor rings and aftermarket speakers and remounted - also added some extra protection to the adaptor rings with some silicone sealant and weather proof membrane. Result - No more leaking rear doors and it's permanent. (Also note; I researched this issue for weeks before commencing the work) VAG - You're an absolute shower for not resolving this crucial design issue ! You can hire me as a consultant so I can point out the error of your ways but you would probably hate me for it.

@@HeathFix lol... they wouldn't dare! I don't know why they've never addressed this design issue which has been going on for probably a decade. I'm sure it affects the mk6 too. My after market speaker rings were £12 and i paid for some Kenwoods in the rear to replace. The hard part was finding a bolt and nut combo to fit the speaker rings as the holes left were oversized for self tappers but I got there in the end.
Any tips on the screws or rivets used to reseal the speaker? Sizing...
@@mammutpenthouse I had to use a nut and bolt combo (stainless hex bolts as once the rivets have come out the holes are not round and oversized. Trying to remember what size i got.... possibly M5 bolt with 20mm thread. I needed longish ones due to fitting aftermarket speaker rings and the bolts have to fit in the recess of the speaker rings. As they are so thin, they fall through the hole, hence the nut requirement. I got stainless due to the weathering it gets subjected to. I'm sure I ordered them from adl components

Hi , my carpet is soaked on the rear passenger footwell, what’s the best way to find where the leak is coming from, I don’t want to remove the door card then find it’s ok, I’ve seen water trickle in when the door is closed ? Thanks
It's probably the same problems a leak or buildups behind the door card. Spray heavily your windows for a few minutes outside on a dry day and see where it leaks. I'd seriously just take it to the dealer, save the hassle and they do the tricky door card removal etc
Did you have to undo the floor carpets and change the sound mat underneath?
No. I ended up re sealing the speaker my self . It’s a bit awkward getting door card of but it’s been worth it. The seal on the speaker was hanging out

Hi my Volkswagen Mark 7 is leaking too and my windows steaming up all the time moisture and my car is getting damp . Help
Is it still under warranty? Roll up to Volkswagen litterly with the steamy wet car first, point out that this is a known problem you found out, see if they'll cover the repairs and subsequent drying out of carpets that will be required if yours are affected (I caught mine just in time!) If it's not too late for u. Otherwise if you're stuck doing it yourself, spray water all over you car windows and doors and locate the exact point of leak. Do this panel by panel. Place disposable dehumidifiers in your car, this will help remove moisture in the air, but wont solve the underlying problem. And, good luck!
I have no warranty on the car it's up I have it booked in with Volkswagen to get new seals and a new brake it's cost me €1,000 and I have to dry the carpet out myself
The carpet is not that bad it's just the whole f****** car feels cold and damp
@@Dublinnotlookinggood sorry to hear that. Also peel back the floor carpet, there will be water UNDER the carpet (gravity) that you cannot directly feel at the surface. This is a PITA, but worth it to prevent mould.

My golf MK4 was renowened for these leaks. Pathetic that VW havent been able to fix this in 20 years.

Use the best you can afford. Sikaflex or 3M outdoor, bathroom or windscreen.
My Aux cord that i ordered on Aliexpress doesn't have a mass wire. Is that a problem? Should it work?
You'll need at least the plug that fits the back to the rcd510. As long as your ordered part has 3 wires you could wire it in no problem. Check the wiring diagram in this vid, make sure you get Left right and common ground in the right place
Is there not any drain holes in bottom of door?
There are only very very small holes in the corners, filled with paint and easily blocked
